THERE'S MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM

FOCUS: There’s More Where That Came From

SCRIPTURE: 1Kings 17: 8 – 16

Then the word of the LORD came to him: “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’ ” She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.

Let’s see what relevance this scripture can offer us today. There’s a famine going on.

1.      Here’s a widow who is down to here last. She was in a state of LACK; both in resources and in lacking in FAITH. I don’t see it as a default in her as a person; she just stated her situation as she saw it: we only have a little and when it’s gone, we die. Have you ever felt like that when you were down and out? No way up and no way leading you to an answer?

2.      And, the way the story is told, it doesn’t appear that she wanted to put any more effort into the situation. I bet you know how it feels to be tired of being tired, too. You’re too tired to even worry about things anymore: you just don’t care anymore; life is not worth trying to live anymore. It’s not uncommon to feel like that.

3.      And, in her very dire situation someone approaches her for help. Of course, she responds by saying I can’t help you because I can barely help myself. I am at the end of my story. I don’t see another day, certainly not anything more in my future. I’m quitting in life.

4.      She has a little oil and flour. Elijah tells her to prepare the little that she has and to share it with him. She is low on food and faith but not on compassion, so she does what he says. He then speaks a WORD over her and tells her that because of her good deed, her jar of flour and oil will NEVER be empty again. And, “It happened just as the LORD SAID through Elijah.”

5.      Are you thinking “I need a miracle like that?” I need God to step into my circumstance with some kind, any kind, of miracle that would turn my lack into an unending flow of supply. I need God to turn my situation around from not enough to more than enough. I need God to speak abundance to the little bit that I have. I could use a miracle like that. Yes?

6.      How do we get a miracle like that? It is a legitimate question. She didn’t pray for it, as far as we know. Maybe she did. Maybe she said within herself “if anything is going to change today, it will take a miracle.” All we read is what she said out loud: it looks like this, Sir, I only have a little and my son and I are going to die after we eat what we have because there isn’t any more; we don’t have any more to live on.

7.      Well, the Man of God knew better and he spoke it: THERE’S MORE. There’s more from a greater source than you are considering. There is more, but your lack is blinding you, and your perspective is binding you into the place where you are. You have only a little, but there is more where that came from.

8.      You may be thinking that the story sounds well and good, and it ends well; but I haven’t seen or heard of any miracle like that happening here in my lifetime. I’ll ask: haven’t you? Maybe not in this way, but haven’t you? Haven’t you seen God show up when you felt depleted in resources, help, hope and faith? I had to tell myself this very thing this morning, that it is obvious that I have experienced ALL OF THAT: I AM STILL HERE miraculousy, and HE KNOWS that I have experienced lack in every one of those categories at points in my life.

The moral of this story is: When you think you are all out of ways; all out of any possibility; all out of strength; there is more where that came from: MORE WAYS because His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts; MORE STRENGTH because whatever little strength we have at the moment can stretch into MORE STRENGTH, STRENGTH TO STRENGTH to keep believing in what God can do.

The WORD also tells us that He can RENEW OUR STRENGTH; that means we had some, and there’s MORE where that came from; STRENGTH can be RENEWED! So can HOPE! So can FAITH! So can our PERSPECTIVES about getting HELP: instead of giving up, remind ourselves that whatever it is we are experiencing in lack, we look to GOD and HIS WORD to remind ourselves that THERE IS MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM.

It might be money. REMIND YOURSELF regardless of how bleak things look, THERE IS MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM. It might be your health. REGARDLESS of how hopeless a diagnosis makes you feel, that little bit of HOPE THAT YOU HAVE, THERE IS MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM and sometimes that HOPE turns into a miracle.

It could be any situation you are in or facing and you are feeling like I CAN’T DO THIS ANYMORE; I CAN’T FIND THE FAITH TO MAKE IT ANYMORE; I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING OR ANYBODY THAT CAN HELP ANYMORE.

This is the point where we have to remember the widow’s story and how taking her little bit of "IMMA DO IT" gave her the miracle she needed. So, in your distresses, when you turn to your WORD and it says BELIEVE GOD. When it says ASK, SEEK, FIND. When it says TRUST IN THE LORD. When it says STAND. I encourage you today, with the little bit that’s in you, tell yourself: IMMA DO IT.
